      <image:title>Still Life - Musings</image:title>
<image:caption>oil/linen available This paintings is a portrait of the artist as a young woman, but also a glimpse behind the screen into my working process. There is always a Thinking Table in my studio filled with objects, photos—some my own – some interesting images that simply caught my eye. Some photos hang around for a year or more while I finalize the concept or work out technical problems. I walk past it everyday. Definitely a “back of mind” method that lets my brain bubble subliminally. Do you recognize the Woodland Stream image in the back; or the sketch for one of my abstract paper pieces?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Still Life - Pears in Cellophane</image:title>
<image:caption>17” x 27” oil/linen When I was arranging "Pears in Cellophane", I immediately thought of John Singer Sargent's painting "Cashmere" with the Moroccan women promenading along in their robes. Painters love pears because they metaphorically remind us of beautiful voluptuous women. My ladies are clothed in cellophane which alternately obscures and exposes their fullness and glowing colors. The pattern of light moves the viewer along the picture plane, picking up reflected colors while the pears themselves glow in the afternoon sun. I create the shimmering quality of light through many layers of transparent glazes. I use a push - pull technique with the oil pigments: laying a wash of misty grays and then picking out colors that are either reflected or seen through the cellophane. This process continues until the shapes of the crinkled cellophane and rounded pears are fully realized. The background also has been developed through subtle glazes of indigo, reddish brown and vermillion. The result is an ambiguous rich space that both sets off and reflects the warm afternoon light and the jewel like pears. This is a simple composition of three elements: table pears and cellophane. The result however is a complex rhythm of color, light and shadow that reveals different nuances and entertains the eye each time it is viewed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Still Life - Sunflowers in a Cobalt Vase</image:title>
<image:caption>27” x 31” oil/linen available The concept behind this painting was to create a study in cobalt and yellow. This beautiful vase immediately sets the focal point while the warm golds of sunflowers lean forward out of the picture plane. Each color choice and line in the painting is devised to create depth and dimension. Soft inexplicit tones of workhorse pigment naples yellow mixed with violet create an undefined space for the background, while the slight tilted table with its brilliant white and yellow cloth are right at your elbow. Adding to the conversation, I included one of my favorite paintings, a portrait by Bernard Gutman. Finally, the bird’s nest grasses move at the slightest breeze.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Still Life - Three Roses</image:title>
<image:caption>22” x 20” oil/linen, available This simple quiet piece combines classical realism with passages of pure painterly color. The entire painting has a glow achieved by coating the canvas in coral and then proceeding to an under painting in rich but but transparent warm browns. I rarely begin on a white ground for my realist work. Since I build up my images with many layers of thin paint, what comes before affects the overall feel of the finished painting. For example my whites are actually many layers of variously toned white pigment so that the light enters and bounces around thus creating depth and a glow that holds far more interest that a slab of titanium white.</image:caption>

<image:caption>24” x 28” oil/linen, available Morning sun streams into a quiet room and illuminates the rich wood of an old violin, then falls upon well-used sheet music. The idea for Tango was born when a friend shared very old sheet music — Tango in D — she found in a small side street shop in Paris. The beautiful violin had belonged to her favorite uncle. For such an intimate piece I employed classical techniques of painting in many layers of transparent color and chiaroscuro. This is a captured moment of light and romance. Rich woods, shimmery velvet and glowing rose petals. Step into the room and experience the moment.</image:caption>

<image:title>Still Life - The Warrior and the Waterlilies</image:title>
<image:caption>37” x 25” oil/linen available I walked into my floral vendor one day and saw these exquisite waterlilies sitting on the counter – an add-in by the wholesaler. And so the painting began. The box is antique Korean, the warrior Chinese, and the demitasse late 1800’s manufactured in China for the export market. I pulled out an old piece of my Grandmother’s lacework and added an open book. A quick note here: Today often such a civilized image is thought incongruous with war. In Asian history the higher levels of the warrior class were scholars as well and greatly valued the elements of civilization. This painting with its tilted picture plane illustrates a key objective of mine: To coax the viewer into the picture plane and enjoy a moment of time and light.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Still Life - Morning Tramp</image:title>
<image:caption>22” x 40” colored pencil/paper, available This large colored pencil painting abounds in detail. Colored pencil is a very intimate medium that beckons the viewer closer, while paintings often are seen to best advantage from more distance. Layers and layers of pencil and a white knuckle approach are required to build the richness of tone you see here. A seemingly black area will actually be the result of layers of dark blue, green, brown and finally black. Like much of my work, this is a narrative painting. Someone has just come in from an early morning tramp --- perhaps in late spring when still cool nights create a mist that doesn’t burn off until much later. Wet boots are cast aside, the umbrella hung over a door knob, and a warm scarf is thrown onto the chair.</image:caption>

<image:caption>24” x 36” oil/linen This painting evolved from a very pastoral scene I came across: A large pasture devoid of tree except for one dense copse on a slight hill in the center. The trees were dressed in deep cinnamon and rich ochres. Mauve clouds began to edge out of the Indian Summer sky. The push pull of yellows and dusty orange leaves against the lavender greys gave a singular feel of power to this simple grove of trees.</image:caption>

<image:caption>36” x 24” oil/linen, available Water is one of favorite subjects. It is an absolute joy to recreate the movement and light play of a woodland stream. In fact I don’t try to paint the water as much as paint the light. Wash after wash of clear colors provide the illusion that you can reach right into the cool flowing water. Another trick I used in Below the Falls was to lay gold into the creek bed on the rocks to recreate the flash and sparkle of mica and other minerals. A fisherman would know just where to cast here for lazy fat trout hiding in the calmer pools.</image:caption>

This painting is a panorama view from a favorite spot on Topsail Beach where you can watch fishermen heading home down the inter-coastal waterway with their day’s catch and perhaps a cold beer. Last light of the day hovers over the early fall marshes. It is also “last call” for summer. Peachy undertones at the beginning emphasize the golden glow of clouds and grasses. Transparent whites and violets create the long wispy clouds. It is quiet here. The wind has died down and only a few insects break the stillness.</image:caption>

<image:caption>oil/linen 32” x 40” available The nature trail behind my house provides endless and varied images for the painter. The woods are constantly changing as old trees fall and young saplings find light. A creek winds through . It can be barely moving in late summer, or a loud torrent after a storm. Here it is early spring with only subtle color starting to break up winter’s monotony. Walking along I hear sibilant wind through the young leaves and a hawk sounding to set up his nesting territory. Closer to the creek, water burbles and sings over small rocks and boulders. I paint moving water by just “diving in” and feeling the movement over rocks and breaking up reflections of the trees and sky.</image:caption>

<image:caption>24'“ x 24” oil, mixed media/canvas, available I could go on about the symbolism of industry, air and earth, but frankly Floating By is a very intuitive piece of much less sinister aesthetics. I t draws upon my love of anthropomorphic shapes and colorist background. Key elements of this piece are rhythm and movement. As the forms unfold from ground they evolve in color and shape moving from heavy masses to amorphous shapes floating by.</image:caption>

<image:caption>30” x 35” oil, oil pastel/linen, available “Tulips” literally emerged from an old partially finished still-life. I had decides to play with some abstract concepts and recharge my creativity. While painting out portions of the canvas, and architectural structure and ambiguous shapes appeared. I felt my way around the canvas to start the interaction of shape and structure . A soft layered translucent palette created the illusion of depth and space. I worked back into the canvas with oil pastel and charcoal to build mass. The resulting painting can be peeled back to present different imagery each time it is approached.</image:caption>

<image:caption>13” x 16” oli pastel/paper, available The following five works of paper are my first foray back into the abstract in quite a while. These images literally flowed out of my brain through the fingers as if they had been waiting for creation. They ware conceived as a group although each piece can stand alone. Thus you find common elements of shape and color. I particularly love the gutsy lusciousness of oil pastels. They are son textural and color rich that using them is very physical. I have always loved working on paper because it draws the viewer In and sets up a more intimate experience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>oil pastels/paper 17” x 14.5” available Slipping Away is another of those first experimental abstract works. Here I was not as focused on mass and color density, but more on movement. I love working with anthropomorphic shapes. We subconsciously relate to them and begin building narratives. Here the oil pastels are loosely applied to create space and movement.</image:caption>

<image:caption>15.5” x 19” oil pastel/paper, available After quite a few years I decided to reconnect with my abstract roots. Three Figures was the first result. It has been a real stream of consciousness trip. Apparently a corner of my brain has been saving ideas and just waiting for the right moment. I now fully enjoy letting loose with an abstract work in between my realist paintings which, as a result, are fresher and more painterly. The abstract works also benefit from stronger composition discipline.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Abstract - Excavation</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil, mixed media/linen 23” x 28” available Excavation is a fantasy landscape filled with movement. For me some of the figures seem to quiver in anticipation of rising from the earth. Solid and semi-sheer color freely blend into one another to further underline the ambiguous line between foreground and background. I also drew on the canvas surface with oil pastel sticks and graphite to further define certain shapes or to float others across the picture plane.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Abstract - Tapestry</image:title>
<image:caption>Mixed media on paper 6” x 9” available As I explore abstraction I am also experimenting with surface quality and various medium. A small piece, Tapestry provided the opportunity to layer hand made papers under and over pigments. The papers became translucent when melded to the ground with a size liquid. I then had three layers on the picture plane: the melded paper itself, the partially obscured image and the new layering on top. If I simply glued the paper shapes onto the ground, they retained their opacity. In all cases an interesting surface texture evolved. I also incorporated gold leaf to juxtapose flashes of light against the rich density of oil pastel pigments.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Abstract - Earth</image:title>
<image:caption>Mixed media on paper 20” x 30” available This is a work of rich colors slowly bubble to the surface. I applied large areas of gold leaf at the outset to give off small flashes of light as the eye moves around the image --- minerals in the earth. Layers of paper and oil pastel create richness of depth and texture while purposeful drawing with charcoal and oil pastel lends a playful feel to the shapes and movement.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Abstract - Water</image:title>
<image:caption>Mixed media on paper 20” x 30” available Water is meant to be a companion to Earth. Initially I laid in verticals as a structural device, but was reminded of the Pacific kelp beds rising up to the sun with all manner of life flowing in, around and through. The blue/green palette echoes colors of the sea and water. In this piece I kept spaces much more open. Instead of heaves and bubbling of Earth, here the movement ebbs and flows.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Abstract - The Scent of Color</image:title>
<image:caption>oil and mixed media/linen 28” x 36” available There is a phenomenon called synesthesia in which certain senses may find pathways to another sense. One of the most well known is the link between music and color. Early on in this painting the phrase “the scent of color” came into my head. The canvas is large enough that I felt enveloped by the paint colors. I was no longer just painting and seeing, but also smelling the emerging image. A lacy framework of sweet, spicy hot reds, piquant gingery oranges and piquant dark tones were laid over an emollient buttery mix of subtle colors. The use of cold wax medium further enhanced this visual tactile sensual experience. And finally flashes of gold leaf snapped and popped on the surface. The Scent of Color reflects a truly intuitive painting experience. For the artist this is a happy convergence experience and feeling – a real sweet spot.</image:caption>
